WHEN WE SEE US. A Century of Black Figuration in Painting
This multifaceted special exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart introduces viewers to figurative painting by Black artists from Africa and the African Diaspora dating from the 1920s through to the present. Sound stations and atmospheric staging provide complementary contextual elements as aids to interpretation. A multilayered series of public programmes designed in collaboration with external partners provides additional approaches to the exhibition.

All over town, we can it murmured that…“Painting is back”. Draping across gallery and museum walls with renewed confidence, we regale it. This has not always been the case, and such a return to favor can feel like a small renaissance. Though of course, figurative painting has always been very much alive, and such is reflected in agnès b.’s collection, which never ceased to give it pride of place. From the walls of Brooklyn to the streets of Paris, agnès has always embraced “what caught her eye” without taboo or aesthetic hierarchy. Her taste moves effortlessly from the punk, underground notes of Harmony Korine’s ghostly palette, to Cuban artist Armando Marino’s solitary and symbolist figures, through to the more societal and engaged compositions from the Congolese Chéri Samba and Malian Amadou Sanogo, then lingering attentively on representations of the body and nature in works by Claire Tabouret or Lola Montes Schnabel (Julian’s daughter), all while staying true to the candor and authenticity of the pictorial gesture, as evidenced by the childhood motifs in Loulou Picasso‘s work.

Exposition collective avec Rita Alaoui, Marcella Barcelo,Ségolène Kan et Armando Marino Les artistes présentent une diversité d'approches, allant de l'observationcontemplative à une exploration sensible. Les œuvres ne se limitent pas àcapturer des couleurs et des formes, mais ouvrent des portes vers le mouvement,qu'il soit visible ou non manifesté. Tel une pierre qui continue d'êtretaillée, ces nouveaux rouleaux inspirent et dévoilent un nouveau monde. Dans ce cheminement esthétique, le visiteur est convié à se connecter à sonintuition, par le truchement de la nature. Le " Réveil Botanique " estun refuge où l'esprit peut errer parmi les feuilles et les pétales, cherchant àretrouver une harmonie perdue dans le rythme immuable et nourricier de la vievégétale. À chaque cycle ses saisons, ses symboles, ses degrés. La GALERIE ANNEDE VILLEPOIX nous invite cette fois à une révolution d’un autre ordre, où lesclameurs s’apaisent pour laisser place à l’enthousiasme, un réveil botaniquerévélant la profondeur de multiples niveaux de lecture.
